8, 2002 To meet the growing requirement for temperature surveying, Datapaq has upgraded its Furnace Tracker System to allow real-time monitoring. This means that continuous and large batch furnaces, which often have to be taken out of production for up to two days to set up a survey, can now be surveyed quickly and easily without interruption. A data logger with a built-in transmitter is placed inside a stainless steel thermal barrier to protect the logger from high heat during the survey. Often, the thermocouples are attached to the product itself to monitor its heating and cooling. The system is sent through the furnace with an ordinary load. The barrier can also be placed into a fixture that holds the thermocouples in a typical 9-point survey pattern. There is no need for trailing thermocouples to be manoeuvred through furnace doors. This saves setup time, production time, and is safer. Having a real-time transmission from the furnace allows the technician to have instant access to data. Seeing changes to furnace settings in real time provides faster problem-solving, less rework, and comparison of what is happening to what is specified. It can also lessen the setup time of a new furnace. To enhance the Furnace Tracker System, new Insight Software is available that is designed specifically for Temperature Uniformity Surveys. A complete two-page uniformity report is automatic. This allows the user to instantly make calculations on the specified survey ranges (minimum, maximum, spread, deviation from set, etc). In addition, the thermocouple calibration offsets can be added or subtracted from the raw data to give a true temperature reading. Background |

Although kiln cars can be carefully monitored using a conventional kiln profiling system, the problem is not identified until the process is completed. Telemetry profiling provides the ability to see precisely what is happening to the ware during the firing process and to adjust the kiln settings while the batch is still in the kiln. How
it Works The Datapaq Kiln Tracker Telemetry System consists of a Datapaq 11TX data logger/transmitter, a unique phased-evaporative thermal barrier, Kiln Tracker Software, antenna/receiver, and mineral insulated thermocouples. The logger/transmitter operates at temperatures up to 230°F, with battery options for very high temperature or long duration applications. A choice of high performance portable receiver antenna or permanent antenna array receiver ensures maximum signal strength. Background |

27, 2002 Datapaq's latest innovation, the ROS (Rapid Oven Setup) Kit, enables reflow oven users to rapidly and accurately set up for new PCB assemblies. Datapaq has-for the first time in the reflow industry-developed a system that can calculate the optimum oven settings prior to profiling the assembly. The result is accurate "right first time" profiles, saving time and money on every new design or new product introduction. As lead free solders and new packaging technologies are introduced, the process window will decrease further, making the ROS system a necessity in the continuous quest for greater productivity. The ROS uses a Heat Transfer Sensor to precisely characterize the oven by measuring the oven's heating effectiveness. This characterization is performed only once per oven, and the associated data is applied to all new PCBs being assembled. In addition, the Datapaq ROS Software makes use of the CAD data from the PCB assembly. The CAD data, combined with measured oven performance, produces a thermal image of the assembly as it passes through the oven. The thermal image enables the user to quickly view the profile at hundreds of points on the PCB, thus ensuring the entire assembly will be within the required specification. It is like having hundreds of virtual thermocouples attached to the assembly, but without the wires! Using this information together with a user defined target profile, the software calculates the optimum line speed and zone temperature settings. Because the Datapaq ROS System uses the CAD data, ROS can calculate the required oven settings without running a PCB through the oven. This leads to even greater accuracy, as the prediction is not compromised by the attachment method used for the thermocouples There are often many solutions that can provide the optimum profile, so the software will provide a ranked list of recipes. By simply highlighting a recipe, the user can examine the time/temperature profile together with a full numerical analysis. To avoid the possible creation of many similar recipes, the software can be instructed to search a list of existing recipes, selecting the most suitable for the product and target profile being used. The "right first time" profile saves time, money and reduces scrap incurred in the traditional oven setup process. The system will work equally well on old and new ovens, as any differences in performance are measured and accounted for in the model. Background |
